You've heard it before, "You can't fill from your cup if your cup is empty." Self care is incredibly important for living a balanced life. From an entrepreneurial standpoint, I fully understand feeling like you have to grind, grind, grind to get to your dreams. Though the grind is vital for your success, it also important to put yourself and your care first. Now, I don't know about you, but I sure can't afford multiple spa weekends or luxurious shopping trips. But here are 10 easy ways to care for yourself and maintain that work / life balance we're all chasing.
1. Paint Your Nails
How easy is that!? Nothing makes me feel like I have my life together quite like a fresh coat of lacquer on my digits! I am personally more inclined towards pedicures versus manicures because my nails chip all the time, but that choice is up to you! Whether you choose a funky teal or a classic neutral, painting your nails has a certain zen quality about it. Plus, it's always a bonus to make yourself look and feel pretty!
2. Organize Your Space
Now, I certainly do not usually find cleaning to be a "self care" act. I usually view it as what it is, a chore. But when you're feeling overwhelmed and like your life is all out of sorts, cleaning has a therapeutic effect. Somehow, getting the soap scum off your shower walls can help you figure out that problem at work. Then there are times when organizing the cabinets just puts your soul at ease. Cleaning one part of your life, can drastically reduce the stress of a totally unrelated quadrant in your mind. Win! Win!
I am an artsy person. I love all things art related. I love to knit and crochet, I have always been a painter, I am a designer, I am a writer (which isn't a craft per say, but creativity none the less). I have always been an advocate for creation. It has always been my escape. Growing up in a sports-minded family, art was something that set me apart, but it was mine. Art was my sacred safe place. So whether you like the do beadwork or drawing, or even making cute snails out of cinnamon rolls for your kids, craft your way to happiness! You won't regret it!
I never thought I'd be the person who loves to garden. It is a timely task, but it is also incredibly rewarding every single day. My husband is the outdoorsy type so gardening has become something we get to share together. A great thing about self care, is there are no rules. And that includes if you want to spend your activities with someone who fills your soul. What I find the most rewarding in gardening is the cultivating of vegetables and herbs. When you can walk on your deck and cut fresh cilantro to eat on your shrimp tacos, man that feels good!
And by binge, of course I mean Netflix. Or Hulu, or Amazon Prime, or HBO. Pick your fancy! I am what I like to call a mastered television participant. I LOVE to watch good TV series and I LOVE to talk about the intricacies and nuances of themes and characters. Now, I don't think ALL your time should be spent on a couch not wearing pants, BUT a little here and there isn't so bad.
6. Take a Bath
You know those bath bombs from the fancy organic boutiques? The ones that smell SO good and make your bath water pink or purple. Ya, you know what I mean. My particularly favorite bath bomb shop is LUSH. So wonderful and so earth and animal friendly. A great company that I love being a supporter of. They have these bath bombs that are like BUTTER! I think they may even be called butter bombs but don't quote me on that! These bath bombs are silky AF. They have a lovingly soothing oil to them that makes your skin feel like, you guessed it, BUTTER. I give them a five star rating for sure. So relax, kick back, and soak up the self care!
Now slow your roll. I'm not necessarily talking about wine. I am. I'm always talking about wine. One of my absolute favorite self care practices is going to happy hour with my besties. There are few things craft beer and bitching with your besties can't fix. BUT, there are also many other non-alcoholic options that give that self care vibe. I truly don't have words for that feeling when coffee hits your soul, or how a cup of the right blend of tea can make all your troubles melt away. Whatever your preference, grab a cup, mug, or glass and sit outside...or on a couch.. with your dog... binging Netflix.
8. Reading a Book
This one feels obvious, and maybe a little old school. Maybe that's just me. But a good book sure can take you to another world and help you forget that your boss didn't care for the project you did or that client all but spit in your face. Find a favorite series or join a book club! I am part of the best book club there is, especially for people who don't like people. That book club is, BOOK OF THE MONTH! I honestly can't rave about BOTM more! It is a mail delivered book club where you choose one of five books each month to be mailed right to you! It's AWESOME! I highly suggest it!
9. Listen to a Podcast
Much liking binging Netflix or reading a book, podcasts are a fantastic way to be taken away from the thoughts that are bringing you down. I am only a recent fan of podcasts and I will say, I didn't think I'd be a fan of them, until I became a FAN. There are all sorts of amazing podcasts out there for whatever your interest may be. I am a big fan of the true crime but that's for another blog post. You can find anything in podcasts and they make for great small talk at parties!
10. Journal Your Heart Out
Back in the day there was a time that I thought journaling was only for pre-teen girls. I found diaries to be pithy and full of drama. Not until reading many personal development books did I realize that journaling is VITAL for personal care. I, more than anyone, understand how feelings can get so compacted into your brain that you feel like you could vomit thoughts on the page. I'm telling you right now girlfriend, pour those feelings out! Write it allllll out. Even if you never read it and never look at it ever again, the relief is abounding.
So there you have it! 10 ways to easily take care of yourself so you can get back to being that badass boss babe that you are! Take the time for yourself. It really will change your attitude, your outlook, and your self worth.
